Special Assistant to
the President and Senior Director


The Office advises and assists the President and the National Security Advisor on all aspects of U.S. foreign policy with respect to all the countries of Western and Southern Europe, Canada, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the European Union (EU) and other European regional organizations.

Among the issues that the Office provides advice and assistance to the President on are: the evolution and future enlargement of NATO; development of closer political and economic cooperation between the United States and the European Union; supporting the peace process in Northern Ireland; implementing the Dayton peace agreements in Bosnia and promoting long-term stability in the Balkans; promoting a negotiated settlement on Cyprus and reducing tensions between Greece and Turkey; and the conduct of bilateral relations with the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada and other close friends and allies of the United States in Europe.
