The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has a longstanding history of international collaborations throughout the African region. These range from technical assistance for specific diseases or public health problems, to assistance in countries' development of their public health infrastructure and to emergency preparedness and response. One of CDC's major collaboration in Africa began in 1966 with Smallpox Eradication Program. On-going CDC collaboration in Africa has focused on the following areas 1) Research 2) Emergency Response 3) Public Health Infrastructure Development and 4) Training and Support. Africa serves as an excellent example to learn and exchange ideas. A good foundation has been established, and progress in many important areas is underway.
